Key Findings
Details of road network and road traffic crash fatality rates for 16 randomly selected U.S. cities have been analysed. Higher number of junctions per road length was associated with lower motor- vehicle and pedestrian mortality rates. An additional kilometer of main arterial road was associated with a significantly higher increase in total fatalities. Higher ratio of highways and main arterial roads to non-arterial roads has an association with higher fatality rates. A city with higher proportion of wider roads and large city blocks will require more efforts in road safety interventions.
