Key Findings
This paper focuses specifically on the links between sustainability, the environment, and New Urbanist design. It (1) synthesizes the literature pertaining to environmental sustainability and the built environment, (2) examines the nexus between New Urbanism and sustainability /environmental concerns, and (3) describes and illustrates the use of a framework for evaluating the environmental impacts of the built environment across various scales. It finds that a convergence between environmental and New Urbanist concern emerging. Environmentalists are realizing the need for specific design patterns for regions, cities towns, and neighborhoods in order to achieve sustainability. New Urbanists, in turn, are incorporating more innovative sustainability features in their projects.
