Key Findings
Through the mechanisms outlined in this report —increased informal social control, more effective demand for local services and amenities, and perhaps exposure to a broader range of possibilities for youth—the conclusion is that mixed-income development is a strategy that can improve the quality of life for many low-income families. There is still much to be learned about the challenges of living in mixed-income developments and the extent to which benefits beyond improved environmental conditions are experienced. However, while promising in some significant ways, mixed-income development can be only one component of a more comprehensive strategy for housing poor families.
